How it is built
A moulded EVA clamshell with a 20 mm die-cut foam bed inside and a zipper around the seam. It holds its shape under the weight of everything else in the case, which loose padding does not.
Suits these shells
- Hard shell, polycarbonate
- Flexes under load and springs back. Takes surface scuffing more than cracking.
- Hard shell, ABS
- Stiffer and more brittle than polycarbonate. Corners are the usual failure point.
- Aluminium frame
- A full cover fits badly over the frame lip. Corner and edge guards suit these better.
- Soft side, fabric
- Absorbs impact but scuffs and tears. Zippers and handles take the strain.
