How it is built

Two bottle sleeves, a cuttable foam sheet, a compression fill pad and four interior corner cushions. Between them they cover the four things that go wrong inside a case: the fragile object itself, the odd-shaped object, the empty space, and the corners.

Suits these shells

Hard shell, polycarbonate
Flexes under load and springs back. Takes surface scuffing more than cracking.
Hard shell, ABS
Stiffer and more brittle than polycarbonate. Corners are the usual failure point.
Aluminium frame
A full cover fits badly over the frame lip. Corner and edge guards suit these better.
Soft side, fabric
Absorbs impact but scuffs and tears. Zippers and handles take the strain.

Corner impact test
Free fall from 1.0 m onto a rigid steel plate, case loaded to 15 kg, impact on the lower shell corner, five repeats per sample, three samples, conducted at 23 °C.
Foam density
Closed-cell EVA, apparent density measured per sample block at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, three samples averaged.
